Dhonk

Dhonk, is the name of the tree which makes up the dry deciduous forests of Rajasthan where this organization is based. Dhonk was the result of a livelihoods initiative of Tiger Watch - a conservation NGO based out of Ranthambhor in Rajasthan, India. A need was felt for sustainable income for people living in the park periphery, who earned their income from either cattle grazing or illegal wood-cutting within the boundaries of the national park. Tiger Watch, since it's inception has been working on anti-poaching and reform and rehabilitation of the traditional poaching community – The Mogiyas. Mogiyas are a semi-nomadic tribe in western and central India, whose prime skill is in tracking wild animals. They were used extensively by hunting expeditions before conservation efforts were taken up by the government. With increased efforts towards wildlife conservation in general and tiger conservation in particular, Tiger Watch started its efforts with identifying this tribe that poached animals. The reforms program includes giving alternate livelihood to the ex-poachers families under which several Mogiya women have been trained in handicrafts.
